Call for input: Land and the right to adequate housing
Deadline: 25 May 2025
Purpose: To inform the forthcoming report of the Special Rapporteur on the right to adequate housing on land governance and land management and the right to adequate housing to be presented in October 2025 to the General Assembly of the United Nations.
Background: Access to affordable, well-located and serviced land is central for the realization of the right to adequate housing. Land use and land tenure regulations are also essential to ensure the security of tenure and protect against forced evictions. Despite a long-standing clear prohibition of forced evictions, countries around the world continue to engage in rampant misuse of their land acquisition laws to force people off their land. Lack of access to land and the cost of well-located land for habitation have also become an impediment to ensuring access to affordable housing for all without discrimination in many countries and cities.
