At Least 14 Killed in RSF Shelling on Abu Shouk Camp, North Darfur
On 20 and 21 August 2025, artillery shelling by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) struck the Abu Shouk displacement camp north of El Fasher, North Darfur, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens more.
According to the Sudan Doctors Network, an RSF artillery strike on Wednesday evening killed nine people, including women and children, and wounded 18 others. The following day, the Abu Shouk Camp Emergency Room reported at least five more fatalities and additional injuries as shells hit homes within the camp.
The attacks come amid a worsening humanitarian crisis. Local activists report widespread malnutrition, with seven deaths each week linked to hunger, while free kitchens have been forced to close after being directly targeted. Nearly all of the camp’s water facilities are out of service, and the main market has been shut down following RSF incursions, leaving one-third of the camp under military control.
Abu Shouk camp is one of the largest displacement sites in Darfur and shelters tens of thousands of civilians. El Fasher, the nearest city, remains under siege, with an estimated 300,000 residents cut off from supplies.
DNHR condemns in the strongest terms the targeting of civilians and humanitarian facilities. These acts are clear violations of international humanitarian law and must be investigated. We call for independent investigations, accountability for perpetrators, and immediate guarantees of safe humanitarian access.
