Water crisis in northeast Syria as water supply from station is cut of
Noting that Turkey has cut off water from Alouk water station 40 times in eight months, a local official has said, "Turkey is weaponizing water for political ends."
The head of the water authority in autonomously governed northeast Syria declared the Hasakah Governerate a "disaster area," amid frequent disruption of water supply from the Turkish controlled Alouk water station.
Issa Younes, the co-chair of General Directorate of Drinking Water of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), told North Press Agency that Turkey has cut off water from the station more than 40 times in the past eight months.
The Alouk water station serves as the main water source for the city of Al-Hasakah, and an interruption in its functioning leaves a population of around a million without means of direct access to water.
The station is located near Ras al-Ayn (Sere Kaniye) that was occupied in 2019 by the Turkish military and its proxies.
Noting that during water cuts some neighborhoods have to wait for days, even weeks, Younes said that "Turkey is weaponizing water for political ends."
The officials of AANES and Turkish-backed factions reached on 3 June an agreement under the mediation of the United Nations, which stipulates that the autonomous administration would provide power to Turkish-held areas in return for water supplied from the station to Hasakah, but that agreement has recently been violated by Turkey, Younes said.
